Turn your skills to Success

What does it take and how should you set out to be very successful? This concept has been called the double or triple threat. If you want something extraordinary you have two paths.

One, to become the best at one single thing. This strategy is all but impossible. It’s almost impossible to be the next Messi, Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, Michael Jordan, Lewis Hamilton. This is a lifetime pursuit, sacrifice, luck, and even then, the odds are against you. It can still all depend on someone else’s opinion of you. How many kids have sacrificed their childhoods and education in the chase of professional glory, only to have their dream crushed and having nothing else in their locker to start a fresh, new persuit. To even overcome the mental trauma of having you life suddenly grind to a halt. It’s all your eggs in one basket and you devote yourself to that single endeavour and few of us ever reach the top. Most of us are mere mortals trying to succeed in life. And this is what most of us are happy to do, we succeed, plod along. Sometimes mundane, sometimes miserable. Some measure success by family, job, income. Even small solo business owners are happy to be “make a living”.

However, most people want more. Not just financially more, maybe more personal time, more self, more family time. More time to commit to health and wellbeing. To leisure pursuits. If you really want this, all of this, you need to be successful enough to give yourself these things. So How?

Strategy Two, to be very good at two things, in the top 25%. This is easy; everybody has a few things they could be in the top 25% with some effort. (Give that some thought, what skills do you have)  My advice would be to become great at communicating, public speaking or writing and if you add that to another skill, suddenly you’re valuable and the boss of the people who only have one skill. The skill needs to be backed up by education, competence, experience, life. But education and knowledge are the key to actioning success. So lets say a degree is the bench marker here. (Note: this is achievable by anyone at any age. Mindset is the key.)

Too really put you in the hunt for success, get a 2nd degree on top of your original degree, and try make it diverse, like business degree and a degree in science, or psychology, engineering, this is rare, a double degree or twin skill set and also the diversty. Suddenly you’re in charge or starting your own business using your combined knowledge. Rare and valuable are rewarded in our society. Make yourself rare by combining two or more skill sets until no one else has your mix.

One of those skills as discussed earlier, should be communication, written word, or verbal. Add to this whatever your passion is, that’s the thing you will put easily the most energy into to reach the top 25%. Now you have two skills to sell in combination.

To be at the top levels of success, if you now have an aptitude for a 3rd skill, now you’re in a space that the top successful people occupy. It reads out simple, but it takes effort, discipline. It might take some creativity, diversity. I put it to you, that you will find it hard to find anyone who is very successful who doesn’t have at least 3 skills in the top 25%.

Think about it first, what have you got, what are you passionate about that you could work towards. Will you commit to knowledge, will you apply that to action? Then ask yourself WHEN? Write it down, make it public, hold yourself accountable to others. Set your goals, make them realistic, and look at your options to achieve them and decide what you will do to make them happen. Plan your strategy, be specific, make it measurable, achievable and in a set time frame.

Get a coach, they will help you open your mindset and reach your potential.

Then apply discipline and laser like focus and you can achieve anything.
